I am a big fan of reusable grocery bags. They are so nice and durable and I find that I can get more items into a reusable bag then a plastic bag, which means less to carry. The only problem is I generally leave my reusable bags at home and don't think about them until I'm at the grocery store - oops!

Our company is having great success with this approach to fundraising. We can tie lesson plans and build excitement with the kids and parents! Although the intended use of our Shoppers is to replace plastic bags, they are so sturdy and well designed that parents are using them to haul beach gear, carry books, lunches, etc.! www.virescentshopper.com

There's a great company who does reusable bag fundraisers--the Got Your Bags Maine? initiative has publicized them as well. They're at www.bulletinbag.com

Janeen - That would be great to pick your own colors. I like the hot pink bags! The ones from the company "Bring Your Own Bag" aren't sold direct to consumers. You can check their site to see if there are retailers in your area.

Sandra, yes Im in euros, so what is that in $, Im not sure? I really like the fact that the government here are charging a levy, it really makes it happen and the stats speak for themselves...there are just less platic bags out there.

They last a good while...but if you put in a few big cartons on Milk and Juice in the same one...they do break (but thats the cheaper ones, like the one pictured on my post) the better ones do last.

Sandra neat article. i think the U.S. market
is slowly preparing the consumer for the
reusable bag. over the years I've noticed the
plastic bags have gotten smaller and are not
as sturdy as they used to be. However, until
then I'm DOUBLE BAGGING. . .we've got to make
a change. With regard to the fundraising idea
I like it and will be sure to support it!

Conor, nice blog post response! So 22 cents not sure the conversion (are you on Euros?) but still that is an incentive to use reusable bags. I don't know if levies would happen here in the US, but I think that if retailers realize how much money they save not supplying plastic it helps. So how long do those "bags for life" really last? LOL
