Making sure that our fundraising efforts also abide by laws and regulations is one aspect that non profit organizations must keep in mind. This month we'll touch on two of these legal aspects.

As you may know raffles are one of my favorite types of fundraisers. They are not labor intensive, appeal to a wide variety of people, don't depend on getting people to attend an event and best of all your organization retains most of the profits!

Occasionally I get a question from a reader about the legalities and how to get permits for raffle fundraisers. In the United States each state sets its own laws regarding raffles. I was quite surprised when I started investigating the different regulations because of how much they do vary.

In most states raffles fall under a gaming commission just like bingo, lotteries and casinos. Other states handle raffles only on the local, county level and other states outlaw them all together. Be sure to find out what the law and procedure for permits is where you live before proceeding with this fundaiser.

Feature Article: Thanking Donors on a Dime

In the United States non profit organizations are required to send donors a letter acknowledging the date and amount of donation.

However, beyond mere obligation the letter is your first opportunity to truly thank your donors. This can be the beginning of a great relationship with supporters when you continue to follow up with them after this first letter.

In this month's feature article veteran fundraiser Danielle Hamilton shares with us some unique and personal ways to say thanks.
