Every used book sale stores excess books under the tables, and volunteers restock as needed. After exhausting table stock, dedicated buyers peruse the stock underneath – as long as your knees hold out anyway.

I used to come from out of town (a 2 hour drive) every year with my father, almost from the beginning, but last year while I was looking through the under table boxes a volunteer stopped me, and hit me with the new policy – no looking at the books under the tables.

Angry at being treated like a criminal last year, I wrote to find out if they had discontinued this foolish policy. In the absence of a response I stayed home, but Dad gave it one more try and they are continuing to do this.

The misguided intent seems to be to force customers to keep coming back every day of the sale. It’s worked the opposite for me.

Saying there are 55,000+ books is meaningless if customers aren’t allowed to choose from among them all. At best unethical, at worst false advertising.

I feel sorry for all the volunteers, and people who donate books and cds to support this worthy cause only to have power wielding organizers ruin it for everyone. It used to be a good sale, but I know I won’t be back.
